CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“SAME CELL,” TAVIN SAID as they pushed me into one and tried to lead him to another.

“You heard what your father said,” Galen, his closest guard, said.

Tavin glared at him. “Same. Cell.”

“I can’t. Not if I want to live.” He tried to push Tavin away from the entrance to my cell.

“Same cell. If you want to live,” I said.

If Tavin hadn’t insisted, I wouldn’t have laid down the threat.

Galen stared at me and then at Tavin.

“You heard the lady.” Tavin gave him a tight smirk.

Galen let go of Tavin, letting him enter my cell. He reached into his pocket and handed Tavin the same jar of healing salve that he had given him not so long ago in a different jail and then slammed the door closed.

“Tell my father I coerced you with my magic. He’ll go easy if he thinks you had no choice.”

Galen nodded and glanced at the other three guards, herding them out, leaving us in the dank cell. This one had no amenities the way the jail had, only a hard, damp floor and a bucket in the corner. It was probably meant for the worst of the kingdom’s criminals.

Tavin unscrewed the jar and applied salve to the puncture wound on his chest before he turned to me. He waved at me, and his brow scrunched in frustration as his magic failed in the warded cell.

“Take the dress off so I can attend to your wounds.”

“Let me get your back first,” I said, approaching him, eyeing the torn skin seeping blood down to his waistline where the cloth soaked it in.

I thought he was going to argue with me, but he just handed over the salve and turned, putting his head against the bars.

“How many times have you been whipped?” I asked softly as I applied the magical healing goop.

Coolness layered over the burn in my back. After I finished covering his wounds, I applied some to the puncture near my collarbone and then handed him the jar.

“Enough to know how essential this is.” He lifted the salve and twirled his finger, indicating for me to turn around.

The zipper scraped along my skin as Tavin dragged it down as gently as he could.

With the clasps undone, the dress fell from my shoulders. I didn’t bother covering up as I laid the dress out on the ground, fanning the skirt enough so that more than one person could use it as a buffer to the damp ground underneath.

I gave him my back, and he layered my cuts with the salve, blossoming that cooling sensation.

“You shouldn’t have killed that guard. He was only doing his job.”

I glanced back at him. “I should’ve done it sooner. Then maybe all we would’ve had were single whip marks and not shredded skin.”

Tavin screwed the cap on the jar, slid it into his pants pocket, and then wiped his hands off on the fabric before turning me toward him and cupping my face.

“You protected me.” His thumb dragged softly across my bottom lip.
